Fandango’s word challenges – Fallible and Flash fiction.

Faceless flames, refusing to be extinguished, lit the sky with a intolerable heat. I felt useless. A firefighter for ten years, there was nothing I couldn’t handle. When I retired, I was glad to turn my back on the fear.

My dream, a little farm away from the city, and I was close to losing it.

We were attacking with water and determination, but like a monster, its arms kept growing back. Pushing us back, until we held only a small line. Grass burned into dust around us. Any longer and defeat was inevitable.

As all hope seemed to dwindle into the smoke, I turned to my left. Sarah stood beside me. My wife, friend, and comrade, dug her feet into the brush. I twisted around to see my daughter, Lara.

‘We can do this Dad!’ We can save the farm together.’

As the fallible flames dwindled, my hope grew. Lara was right. Together we were stronger.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
