#95 – Word Prompt – What do you see

I see a world of possibilities by opening a book to a certain page and being able to journey to a distant land and be a pirate on the seven seas. You don’t have to leave your room to find treasure.

I have loved reading since I was five years old and read about a girl called Katie, sent to live on her grandfather’s farm. The description of her world, and the effect she has on those around her was extraordinary. I was immersed in another world of land stretching as far as you could imagine.

I kept going, reading book, after book. It never ceased to amaze me, how simple words on a page could make a character real. I’ve cried, laughed, and rooted for the main character, setting the scenes in my head until reality set in.

It is why I write. To be able to create a character where the reader wants them to succeed. They will journey with them from their lowest point, to where they have found their own metaphorical treasure. I am in control of what happens, and can steer their ship away from danger.

One day I might write about a pirate, called Bethany, who sails across the world in search of her father. His adventures are legendary, but so are hers. From cabin boy to captain, she searches for treasure.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  10. I have been fascinated by stories since I was a little girl too. And it’s amazing to create characters in turn. As a bibliophile and a writer, this was really relatable. Looking forward to reading Bethany’s exploits!
