Derogate and Consent – Posted on the 3rd September 2021 and re-posted for Fandango’s flashback Friday.

As the storm rages around our ship, I hope the crew don’t blame me. Perhaps they they think I have deluded their captain. He is under a spell of my making, and they only way to break that spell.

Mutiny amongst pirates isn’t unknown. What we are asking of them is their consent to fly in the force of danger. Crackling from the clouds above us reveal a deep rooted memory I forgot until now.

As a child it was beautiful, like the sky was singing to its own tune. I couldn’t sleep, and wandered from my cabin. Beautiful, translucent colours, dancing in the sky. I was mesmerised by the shapes shifting in the sky.

It was then I saw it – an island appeared out of nowhere. The ship shifted its course, as if it knew the way. Thunder roared, but I couldn’t look away. It was then that Harry saved me, and the ship turned around.

It was as though our parents derogated the danger by turning away. To them their greatest treasure was on that ship. Now I know see the danger lurking behind those clouds and choose to keep going.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
