All Too Familiar

Familiar voices behind me, and walking home from school a nightmare she had to relive. It would only end if she confided in an adult, but that would make it more real.

Vile, cruel words designed to shoot her down, and most days they break the spirit within her.

Today was different – today she was done crying. She swiftly turned around and they were laughing. It was like they could pull at her already frail edges.

But not today.
