Survival

Thank you https://jimadamsauthordotcom.wordpress.com/author/newepicauthor/ for the music prompt (using emotions as a prompt)

The song I have chosen is I Will Survive, by Gloria Gaynor

I was bullied from the age of eight, mostly through my junior school. I met my best friend at secondary school, so gained a little bit of confidence with her by my side. This song became my mantra. It helped to sing this song, and know I could get through anything. I wasn’t willing to lay down and die. I WILL SURVIVE.

As an adult I can seem either over confident, talking way too much, or under confident, not willing to speak unless spoken to. I am a little bit like a deer in headlights when someone wants to have a conversation with me. I’m much better behind a screen because nobody can see me.

So, thank you Gloria, for getting me through the worst times of my life. A self belief in myself helping me progress through childhood, not letting the bullies get to me. It is something that still goes on today, but is far worse because sometimes they hide behind a computer screen, thinking you can say anything you want because it is only words.

But words hurt, and image, and how others perceive you. We need to teach our children, nobody is perfect. If someone goes to school and their uniform is scruffy, they may not be able to afford anything different. If someone sits quietly at the back of the playground, they may be too afraid to speak to someone.

If you are a victim of bullying, either as a child, or in a relationship as an adult . Don’t ever feel like there is nobody to talk to. There always is. Remember, you will survive.

Nobody ever has the right to make you feel small.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. What an awesome post! And this song is a great mantra to have! Other people’s opinions and words can hurt but luckily we can learn that not everyone’s opinions matter! You are an overcomer and I’m proud of you! 💖
