‘Don’t forget to let the dog out,’ the sticky note on the front of the fridge said.
With a smile, she opened the door, and scrunched the note up. Toby almost sprinted into the garden, she watched as he wagged his tail in a thank you motion. He was almost as old as her, and she loved taking him out for longer walks, but she would have to wait until she got home from work.
‘Here boy, I have chicken,’ she said.
He rushed back inside, and nudged the fridge door.
Shutting the door, she stood in the middle of the kitchen, not quite sure where to go next. She was here for something, but what? Toby, sat by the fridge. Chicken? She retrieved it from the fridge, taking out some milk. A cup of coffee was something she could have, before she started hoovering. At the kettle, she looked at the sticky note – don’t forget to eat something Mum.
She was hungry, perhaps a chicken sandwich.
The kettle boiling, she made dinner, with a little bit more chicken for Toby.
‘Mum, I will be home at five, and we’ll go to the doctors.’ The sticky note on the cupboard door was enough to stop her putting on her coat. She wanted to go and buy some toothpaste, but couldn’t find the keys.
Why was her daughter forever hiding them? It was time for work. Past two o’clock. Her daughter was always doing this! She moved around the house, pulling out drawers, and looking in every single hiding place.
Another sticky note; they were everywhere now. ‘Mum, I will be home at five, we will go to the doctors.’
She stopped, looking at her watch. It was nearly five, perhaps the shops could wait. The door opened; it was Alice, sometimes she was late home from work; she couldn’t help it.
‘Mum, good you’re ready. Did the sticky notes help?’
‘They were everywhere, anyone would think I am forgetting things. What’s this doctors appointment we’re going to? Are you ill? I told you to take it easy, but do you listen.’
‘I’m not ill Mum, but I’ll explain once we’ve got there.’
Good post Diana, with sad undertones.
