https://saltedcaramel670.wordpress.com/tag/5things/ que1stion for bloggers this week is name your top five detectives.
- Miss Marple A little old lady, with silver hair, and a brain to match any London detective. Nobody pays her any attention, but she pays attention to everyone in the room. I have watched them all, from the black and white version with Margaret Rutherford, to the last Miss Marple Geraldine McEwan. There are only a few stories, but each actress has brought a new thinking to Miss Marple.
- Poirot, a Belgian detective, with his cane, and moustache he solves crimes the police cannot. He is very clever and will always find the the killer. My favourite actor would be David Suchet and Peter Ustinov.
- Sherlock Holmes – A character, who like Poirot, solves crimes the police cannot. He has a unique view of characters and can tell where they are from and if they are the murderer by a bit of dirt on their collar. I used to watch it with my dad, and have watched many versions over the years.
- Death in Paradise, with all its different detectives; Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon, Ralf Little, and not forgetting Dwayn, Camille, Florence, Camille and many more. I love the setting, and the characters. The first detective was murdered, but was in a cameo as a ghost. There is a new series in the UK called Beyond Paradise.
- Murdoch in Murdoch Mysteries It is set in the 1900’s and he is a bit like Sherlock Holmes, where he is the only detective able to solve the mystery. When the series starts he is on his own, but marries Doctor Julian Ogden, a female coroner. I love this show because it is quirky and so is he.
I can’t do it, there are so many more I like, and cannot put them in order; Quincy, Midsummer Murders, Vera, Morse, Endeavor, UK, and USA Law and Order, Van Der Valk, NCIS (Los Angeles, New Orleans, Hawaii, NCIS original with Gibbs).
I think I have an problem, call a detective
I love all these shows. I even watch the reruns of the reruns.
I like the earlier episodes of Murdoch best.
I don’t mind the different actors portraying the main character. As you noted, each brings out a new bit of the detective.

Me too, I forgot Bones, which is kind of a detective series and every so often I will watch from the beginning, and better at guessing who the murderer is. With Marple it is easier, because they never change.
