Birthday Money

A blue and pink envelope, with a handwritten address. It could only be from Grannie; she never trusted banks, keeping most of her money in cash rather than card. Shelley shook the envelope, but there were no rattling sounds. Perhaps, because she was a grand old age of five this year, she would get an actual note.

She loved her birthday, was treated to all manner of things, but it was always Grannie’s presents that made her smile. A silly pair of socks with Pokémon or Everest on them. A big bag of pens to replace the ones that didn’t work any more, or even some presents of Facebook Market. Grannie said, it would help other children, who couldn’t afford to buy things.

Peeling it slowly open, she pulled out the card. It had Chase and Everest on the front. Happy Fifth Birthday, love Grannie, in he gentle scrawl. There was a whole five pound note. She could go to the pound shop and get five things in there, or save it for something bigger.

‘Mummy, I got five pounds from Grannie, can we go to the shops?’

‘Course we can love, do you want to thank her?’

‘Yes please.’

A few seconds later and she spoke to her Grannie. ‘Thank you for my money.’

‘You’re welcome darling, love you.’

‘Love you too, stay safe Grannie.’

‘You too.’

It was only five pounds, but sometimes it wasn’t about the amount, but the family love. Years later, when Shelly got a job, she always sent her Grannie money and a pair of socks with Harry Potter on, with her big gift on her birthday.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

      1. When I was little we had a lot of interaction with my mom’s side of the family and sometimes my dads. After my mom died that all ended. Everyone that I know on my mom’s side, except a few cousins are all deceased. I keep in touch with a bunch of cousins but I know my siblings do not.
