Intruder

This is the first three words of a book by N V Peacock called ”The Brother”. I haven’t read it yet, but I have read ”Little Bones”, a book about a serial killer’s daughter, murder, and lots of twists and turns. I may have read the instructions wrong, but here goes.

An intruder is in my home.

I’m not sure what I should do, except I am on my own. I stepped out on to the landing. A flash light, sneaking into the crevices of the front room. Looking for something, they will never be able to find. Would I be stupid enough to leave it lying about? Really, is he that dumb?

Grabbing the first heavy thing I can see; a pair of my designer boots, with the highest heel. If he makes trouble, then so can I. Not able to find my gun, he moves into the kitchen. Not quiet in the least, he thinks I still take sleeping tablets. Actually that is something I told him earlier, when he tried to pick me up in the bar.

Silently, swiftly, slowly in his direction, it is easy to creep up on him. One good hit and he is down without an argument. A human body, small in the darkness. Not the man in the bar, but his accomplice.

‘My identity, will not be here. You are in my home now, and it is easy to fool you. My assassin days are over, but I might just slip, and the gun will go off.’ I say, as I slap him awake

‘It is time you paid for your actions. Do you not feel any shame?’

‘No,’ I say honestly

‘You have killed over a hundred people in ten years. Now you are playing happy families, bringing up you child, like it never happened.’

‘All those, so called victims, weren’t anything of the sort. They deserved all they got. My family has nothing to do with my past. I am warning you now, leave me alone. I will never reveal my old name. I deserve a new start, so this time I will let you go. But if you ever come near my family again, you won’t be so lucky.’

He walks out of the door, and hopefully he won’t be back.
