Into The Water – By Paula Hawkins

Into the water is the story of two sisters, Nel and Jules. They say Nel jumped to her death in the drowning pool. Jules has to travel back home to look after their teenage daughter Lena. From the moment they meet, they do not get along. One blaming the other for a loss neither of them is to blame for.

Two deaths in the drowning pool – Nel and a teenager called Katie. With a history of its own, witches were drowned there, to see if they were witches. If they survived then they were killed for being evil. If they died, then nobody would grieve for them.

The story is told from multiple points of view – Jules, Nel, Lean Nikkie (a medium) Patrick, Helen, Sean and Erin (police investigating the murder) and a few more. It is a small community, where everyone is interlinked by marriage and murder. I’m not sure I liked that there were so many points of view. I get that the writer wanted to make us think about who the murderer could be, and that it was a small community with people nobody really knew. For me, it got confusing at times. When I just got into the headspace of one character, it was moved on to the next.

All I wanted to hear from was Nel, Jules and Lena.

Having said that, it was well written, and full of suspense. There were many twists and turns, and I liked the way the characters were sent back into their own pasts. Even the differences between Nel, Jules and Lena were only a problem because nobody took the time to talk. Time moves forward, but secrets don’t.
