‘You alright?’

‘You are such a vision; I’ve been married to you for fifty years and I love you as much as I did on our first date,’ Robert said, with a quiet kiss on her cheek.

‘Go on with you. I’m only wearing an old pair of gardening trousers and a big, baggy jumper. I haven’t even taken the curlers out of my hair,’ Lilian said, pulling down her woollen sleeves.

‘Yea, but that’s what I love about you. When you snip and prune in the garden, I watch you create something beautiful from nothing but love. You were so sweet, bringing my mum roses from your garden on our third date.’

‘That’s because your mum made me laugh – she was a great drinking partner.’

‘She always loved a drink, or three, that’s for sure. I tell you what, if you want we’ll go for a meal tonight. I’ll help in the garden, raking up those leaves. It will take us an hour to finish. What do you say?’

‘Good idea. Does that include a pudding?’

‘Course it does, and a few whisky and lemonades.’

Lilian embraced him tightly, relishing the cosy sensation of his fuzzy stubble tickling her cheek. ‘Love you,’ she said.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
