‘Sorry I can’t stay longer, Grannie, but I promised Charles I would spend boxing day with him,’ Tabitha said, pulling down the arms of her woollen jumper.

Linked to the past with each sorry, Martha’s gaze turned to her new boyfriend. He held her hand so tight, like letting go was a chore. She stuck so close, it was almost like she was scared to move away.

Tabitha’s hurry to get back to university after the Christmas break, a sure sign something could be wrong in their relationship. Sure, he was charming, but so was Thomas.
