When I Grow Up

Grannie tells me I can be whatever I wanted to be. When I told her my dream job would be a nun. Sister Act is my bestest film. She laughed. So much her dentures lost their footing. She explained, they prayed every morning and evening and had to give up their favourite food, it didn’t sound like fun. Her ultimate point of wearing a habit, covering their hair, and I changed my mind.

Mine is long, and I loved plaits.

My second goal was to be a pirate. I saw Pirates of the Caribbean and thought it would be fun to sail the high seas until I found out I was seasick. We went on a ferry to the Isle of White and I couldn’t keep my sandwiches inside my stomach.

A Geisha was next and the Queen of England.

Watching the motor cross – Grumpy’s best race – and my choice was easy to make. Barbie agrees. A handmade helmet, from some plastic pens, and she was safe to go. I got given a small motorcycle.

I think she is right, and when I am as old as Mummy, I am going to win lots of races.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
