‘What? There must be some mistake,’ Stan said.
‘All you have to do is allow us access to your mobile. Download a desktop app. We help trace the fraudulent payment and refund you. Rest assured, we will guide you through the process.
He scratched at his grey stubble; it was always difficult using his banking app. His granddaughter helped. She even showed him how to add anti-virus on to his computer. The strange thing was, it would be impossible to buy anything because there was no money.
He hated overdrafts.’
‘Wait a moment, have locate my card,’ he said, snapping his laptop open, he tapped the mobile image. It was easier without computers. The only hoax you worried about were the pamphlets in the post informing you about being a millionaire and they could be thrown in the bin.
‘Grumps, what do you want?’
‘I am talking to some person who says I have had money stolen. He is asking if I download some app.’
‘No, hang up! It is a scam! Tell them you are planning to inform the police! Once you to do it, they see everything. Pictures, banks, everything.’
‘Thankyou sweetheart.’
‘You son of a … I am a pensioner, fought in the war. This trash isn’t moving anywhere. Do you realise I was special forces? If you ring another time, I’ll call my mates.’
‘Grumps, you were in the medical core.’
His grin widened as he leant on his stick. ‘Appreciate the info. I am letting all my friends at the senior center know. It is criminal what they are doing.’
‘Agreed, you still up for a game of Cluedo later?’
‘Definitely, and this time, I am going to beat you.’
I know someone who fell for a scam like that. A phone call about a hacked computer and a request of a credit card number to fix it. And the person gave them the card number. 😦 I had to look up “Cluedo” and was surprised to see that it’s the same game as “Clue”.
