Reflection

She circled the metal orb in her palm; with this travelling back in time was possible.

Outside her window, it was impossible to go out for long. Even with an oxygen mask. As disease wiped the entire population of bees, flowers in the next Spring dwindled. Three years later. Nothing but barren land remained.

A reflection of hope circled the flames, and Aisha wondered if she could leave her child. Yet, to do nothing? Part of her was sceptical about this supposed life changing theory.

She was going to be travelling to a dark age, where technology had barely begun. Artificial intelligence was mere copper wires using binary (zero’s and noughts). In 2090 it evolved into a variable life entity.

It was illegal to use it in any exams. Students, unable to find their own inspiration struggled to write anything down. The latest government idea; direct brain transfer of their knowledge was being discussed in the house of lords.

Even that was open to hacking.

Her daughter, Sophie, peeked up from her reading book- a family tradition of accessing paper and ink.

‘Mummy, can we order some air? I want to go outside, and my helmet has run out.’

‘Yes, and perhaps we could go and visit the garden museum.’

They were lucky, but for those on the poverty line, breathing was impossible. Her decision made, she smiled at her little one. If she were to survive, then it was the only way to safeguard the earth.

‘Why are you sad?’

‘I have to go on a work trip.’

‘For how long?’

‘A few days.’ She kissed her on the cheek. ‘Daddy will take good care of you. Grannie might even carry her old Paw Patrol downloads.’

‘We could bake some of her muffins.’

‘She would love that.’

‘I love you Mummy.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
