A liminal horizon stretched beyond the tracks.
I held my battered rucksack over my shoulders, with nothing more than a few essentials packed; a reading book, snacks from the cupboard, the money in my savings jar, and a water bottle. I wore my coat.
Clothes were a luxury I lacked the means to afford.
Honesty – something I had difficulty with. I had to get as far away as possible to not be pulled in by his promises. I hauled myself up on the empty trolley car. Wood shavings littered the bottom like a hamster’s cage. The air was musty. I sat on the harsh floor, leaning against my bruised belongings.
I was unable to return and bring my mobile. Expect the changes, only to find out he would never change. Fists were his only communication.
One wrong word? I wasn’t even certain what I said, only that it made him angry. I pull my sweater further over my arms. Hiding under layers, my bruises were not able to share the truth.
The trembling of the train, and I hunch into the corner.
Wherever life takes me, I have the power.
I am safe.
The great escape, and much needed. It takes courage and facing the truth (“he would never change”). Great storytelling, Diana.
