Hope

Martha sat on the black sofa, with a box in one hand, and wet crumpled tissues in the other.

Her life existed as a winding road, filled with sharp bends, where she had no control over the speed or the direction of her travels. Overwhelming. Opposite her therapist, the room suffocated her feelings into a bundle of wool which tangled her thoughts into unconnected threads of fear.

‘You’ve done the right thing,’ her therapist smiled. ‘The first step is being here.’

‘It’s just, sometimes I am the strong glue, but I don’t feel all that strong.’

‘Strength isn’t about pushing through regardless, it is about being honest when we are struggling.’

She pulled at the soft cotton of her jumper. ‘What do I do next?’

‘Talk, this is a safe space.’

‘Thank you.’

Making progress would not happen immediately, but she had the capability to do it with support. She needed to do was tell the truth to her family. Her love would never stop, and she could get well; that way they could face the future with hope.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
