‘Mummy, what came first the chicken or the egg?’ Lily tapped the shell of her breakfast, dipping her toast on the runny yolk inside.

‘Well, that’s the questions isn’t it.’

‘What’s the answer though?’

Sarah leaned against the wooden chair, and thought about what to say.

‘Don’t know, I suppose the egg, because then a chick wouldn’t be born.’

‘Did the chick just appear?’

It was too early in the morning to discuss the meaning of life.

‘How are baby chicks …?’

The subject changed in the split of a second, she picked up the empty plates from the kitchen table.

‘I tell you what, shall we go to the park today. There are some baby ducks there, and we could go and feed them. We need to buy some seeds, beause bread is bad for them.’

‘Like chocolate is for us?’

‘Similar yes.’

‘Okay. Can I wear my sun dress, with the red flowers on?’

‘Sure.’

She smiled as her little girl jumped the stairs to the landing. It didn’t seem like yesterday she was a baby. In September she was starting school full time.

Where had the years gone? Whatever arrived first, her baby was growing up.

  4. All of us who have had children have had to live through the “why” stage. It can prove to be rather interesting and annoying at the same time! Lovely story, Diana.
