Cost of Living

‘For example, we can no longer afford to drive to work because our vehicle drinks too much diesel. We have to cut back. A ten-minute walk, that’s all.’

‘That’s true, but if it is raining or snowing …’

Stan stared at his figures again, and said, ‘Yea, but we need to make some cutbacks.’

‘What about your hot chocolate and cake? They cost six pounds, and over five days, you are spending the same amount we put in the car.’

‘It is winter, and my only treat.’

‘Mummy, why don’t you walk, and have an umbrella? Daddy, you have that mug with the lid and plenty of hot chocolate. I got you for your birthday. I could have the Aldi sweets instead of my Haribo. I could bake some cupcakes, and you could eat those.’

They both grinned at their daughter with pride in their eyes.

‘Besides, if we save enough, you will be able to buy my Bluey house from Facebook Marketplace.’

The kitchen, full of joy, and for a moment their worries took second place to the laughter that filled the room.

‘Okay, can we borrow your piggy bank?’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
