Her Mama

With a head full of straw, Alessandra rifled through an old silver tin, with a clock face on it. She remembered sitting on the carpet, looking through the grainy photographs.

Her mama never denied she had a sister, but they still weren’t on speaking terms.

Alessandra couldn’t imagine not talking to her brother, George. As irritating as he could be; she loved him. Throughout her chemotherapy, she never once felt alone.

Black and white, with faded edges, she stroked the smiling faces. Two young women, bonding over a shared joke. Thirty years of separation; perhaps it was time to repair the damage. She flipped to the rear. ‘‘Bella and Mariette, sisters forever’’.

She searched through until she located an airmail envelope; the letter was long gone. There was an address. Was this the chance she was looking for? Perhaps, if she reached out, her mama wouldn’t carry the lonliness around like something she deserved.

Picking up a pen, she wrote on scented paper, ‘‘Dear aunt Bella, I hope you are well …’’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
