A stranger smiled, as Carol shielded her eyes from the sun.
At first she thought of walking on by, but decided to stop. Perhaps this was a time to smile too. The stream flowed across smooth stones carrying with them a dream of a happier existence. She would never forget her husband. Not for a second. Every time she pruned the roses, or mowed the lawn she could hear his gentle tone.
Sitting on the bench, she removed her coat.
Taking out the seeds from her bag, she waited for a young mum, her brood of babies learning to swim. She grinned as her memories swooped her to a time when she cared for her children. Tiny footsteps near the river, throwing bread for the swans.
She observed a young girl, holding her mum’s hand.
A stranger smiled, as Carol passed on the joy.
The world feels kinder when people smile. I cannot trust people who don’t smile.
This is beautiful writing, Diana. Thank you.
