Skipping School

Dad blew his fuse when I threw my blazer on the coat hook. My face froze, as I realised he must have got a phone call from my teacher; I forgot all about missing my club.

I wasn’t planning to skip, but my mate wanted someone to join him on his train journey to the seaside. He refused to say why, just that he owed a favour, and we could spend the day at the arcade; his treat.

I scuffed my new trainers on to the carpet, sand still trapped between my toes.

‘I can explain,’ I said.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
