shifts into screams

pulsing, bravely beating

across the chasm of years

from a baby’s first stumbling steps

to a testy teenager’s raging war cry

at parents and tiresome teachers

their own battle forgotten when

they switch to adult overthinking

wrinkles at a premium price

ready to breathe their last

stealthy silence.
