Happy Accident

Written for https://wordofthedaychallenge.wordpress.com/category/word-of-the-day/

I always think of myself as a happy accident.

My mum was thirty-nine, and my dad was fifty when I was born. My sister was sixteen years older and my brother is ten years my senior. he said that was untrue. He was clearly sixty. That’s okay with me, because that makes me fifty in December.

Being the youngest definitely has its perks. You get away with more because your parents have practiced with the other two. Growing up, it would have been nice to have someone at home, nearer my age.

I got on well with my nephew and niece (five and eight years younger). We would go out collecting conkers, and cheating at Monopoly was a regular occurrence. We used to have long talks about how we would be better next time.

How did my parents cope with a baby? Not sure. I count myself lucky to be part of such an amazing family. We might not talk every day, but I know we will be there for each other. We are only a phone call away.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. Lovely. My Mum was 34 when she had me, the youngest of her four children. She had two boys from her first marriage, (14 and 12 years my senior) and my sister (5 years older) and I with my Dad. Oldest brother grew up with his Dad, Bro was part of my family and always looked out for me. He’s now in NZ and the closest of my siblings as I have little contact with the others or their families.

  2. I cannot imagine the shock and surprise to suddenly find oneself pregnant suddenly after a good ten years of no diapers!

You are definitely a happy accident just by what you write here.
