Day Three – Sorrento

We booked a tour to Pompeii at a booth near the station. It included a return ticket and the entrance price. The train, covered in colourful graffiti. It wasn’t what I expected. The only thing it came close to was the tube system in London.

The bus system is amazing. I don’t think I could drive on the roads though. They are slimmer than the UK, as you move up the hills two buses barely fit. To anyone who knows what the night bus is; it felt like we were in a magical world and another car was squeezing thin. There are a lot of scooters. They find an available spot and go for it. Takes courage. Most of the time, the only signal used is the blare of the horn.

During the journey, a saxophone and accordion player serenaded us with an Italian tune. Brilliant. Well worth a donation. That’s amore, one of their songs.

Once at the station, our tour guide, along with a bright umbrella, took us to the entrance. Supplied with earphones, she expertly showed us each forgotten home and shop. A shell of what it was, you could still imagine what it looked like before. We sat in a theatre. A stage and stone stairs remained. Climbing up them was okay (va bene) but going down I took it one at a time.

To walk where others walked, down cobbled roads, inside spas, shops, domiciles (homes) is something I am in awe of. I wonder what people will think of our civilisations will think of us in three hundred years. Would they feel the same? Probably. Our technology would be outdated.

That’s it for today

Prego (See you soon).
