Boy’s Night Out

John peered up into the tree, his stomach lurching into a tsunami of last night’s curry. His mate had tears running down his face. Although he could always handle his drink way better.

That last beer, or shot; truth was his memory of the night was a little bit hazy. He didn’t remember even riding his son’s bike. Although wasn’t there a dare? His or Seamus’s thought of taking a midnight bike ride.

‘I mean, I don’t really get how we got them up there,’ John said, shielding his eyes from the sun. Did it have to be that bright? Trouble was, it wasn’t his only problem. Getting the bike out of the tree.

‘How do we get them out of there? Is more what I am saying. I mean, these old legs are going to struggle. Could we just leave them there? Blame it on the other kids.’

‘I would, it’s just they might blame the wrong person; my kid could get a kicking.’

‘I’ll get my ladder, it should be easy enough I suppose.’ Seamus said.

‘Next time you suggest a night out, I’m going tee total.’ John giggled, until another memory took hold. ‘I don’t think I’ll go home.’

‘Why?’

”Not sure if the ladder is a good idea,’ he said. ‘I think we used it to break in to the orchard. Scrumping for apples, although we got chased off by that big wolf.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
