‘There’s a method to knitting.’

Claire held the needles in her hand, the sharp end pointing into her palm. How did her gran make it look so easy? She looped the thread around, making sure she didn’t injure herself in the process.

Grumpy had a bag of Haribos in the cupboard, and they would invariably share. Grannie would either bake, help her build paper airplanes or watch Bluey. Learning to craft with wool was a little old fashioned, but it was fun.

A yellow blanket, now used for her dolls, protected them.

An hour later, she created, what looked like, a scarf.

It was a start, and she wanted to design something for Christmas. Without money, or a job (she was only eight) that was an issue.

‘Can I have another packet of sweets please?’

‘Only one, remember we are seeing Mummy and Daddy, and we are having Chinese for his birthday.’

‘How did you learn Grannie?’

‘My Mum, but to be honest, I’m not that great. My aunties could knit and simultaneously look at television.

She treasured spending time with her grandparents.
