I have seen comments on social media from new writers wondering whether they need to read books to be able to write them.
In my opinion, reading is important, but you don’t necessarily need to be reading. You can be listening too. Audio books are becoming more popular, and a great way to be part of the author’s journey.
I gain inspiration from what I’ve read. From my childhood books – Katie, What Katie did next and The Twins of St Claire’s. To books I’ve read as a adult – Harry Potter, The Kathy Reich series of books, and my latest read; The Secret at Sunset Hill. Words never cease to amaze me, as I travel into the imagination of the author.
It is through reading, or listening to an audio book you can understand what works well. Think about any books that have read. What made them unique? Why did you love them so much? Why did you empathise with the main character? Words, crafted well, have an impact on the reader.
So, yes – I do think you need to read to be a writer. How else do you know what works when writing your own.
I think it helps too, especially for new writers. The two are so intertwined in my mind. I can’t imagine one without the other. ❤️

I can’t either. I’ve read paperback books since I was five years old. There are writers, who are dyslexic. My son struggles with writing, but his art work is brilliant. He is in the process of writing a web page (comic book style). I help him with the text. It can be done, but it must be difficult.
