Author Advice – Titles

When scrolling through social media, I always see writers asking about what would be a great title for their book. They can write a whole novel, but find it difficult to find its name.

My latest book ‘It Won’t Happen Again’ was originally called Behind Closed Doors. At first, it seemed a fitting title, but it was too generic. Now if I look it up on Amazon, it is the second on the list.

Don’t worry too much about your title until you’ve finished the manuscript. Finish your project, and then think about a name. It can be called anything at the beginning. That’s the thing about titles – they can change. You are the writer and in control of what it’s called.

If you have a title in mind, type it in a search engine. See how many books have the same name. I guarantee you will be surprised. If there are too many, then maybe it is an idea to change it.

Look through your manuscript. Is there a sentence there that stands out? Think of the theme of your book to find a suitable title. If you are still not sure ask for advice. Social media can be a great place to find other authors who would help you if you’re stuck.
