Saturday Special – Snippet from It Won’t Happen Again

‘I was like that with my friend Julie. I met her when I was volunteered at church functions.’

‘I wouldn’t imagine your father liked that?’

‘It made him look good with the neighbours, his daughter, helping out at the church.’

‘Makes sense.’

‘During our breaks we used to sneak to the back of the church. She got her big brother to buy a packet of ten menthol cigarettes. We shared them between us. It’s a wonder we didn’t get caught by old Crowthorne, but Julie always did have nine lives,’ Laura said, her grin spread across her face like wildfire.

‘Sounds like she was good for you.’

‘I remember several nights, when Thomas and Mum were sleeping, she persuaded me to sneak out. Thomas used to lock the door, so I couldn’t get out, but I climbed down the apple tree, just outside my window.’

‘Where did you go?’

‘Nowhere special, just parties her boyfriend used to hold in the early hours of the morning.’

‘Did Thomas ever find out?’

‘No, but I think Mum suspected.’
