From Halloween word prompt

I am selecting a few sour sweets from the pick and mix section when I hear a rattling behind me. Brian gives me that toothy grin of his. He was the first to reply to my invite, but he never knows what to wear.

‘Wendy, glad I caught you, but I’ve tried everywhere for my costume, but they’ve run out.’

‘Don’t worry about fancy dress, just bring yourself and a bottle of red,’ I said.

He looked so scared, his spine shivered at the very thought of letting me down. I had a thought, and delved into my bag. Rooting round at the bottom I found what I was looking for. I was going to take it to the Heart Foundation, but it would do him just as well.

‘Take this cape, it’s one of my old ones. You might need to repair it, but what do you think?’

‘Thanks Wendy,’ he says, his rattling more confident as he walked away.

I felt sorry for Brian, he never had anybody to visit him. At least I had my sister to live with, it had to be lonely for him.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
