All Gone!

‘Mum, could I have a bike for my birthday, I’ve seen a great one, with triple gears, and a titanium frame. It’s really one of kind.’

‘How much?’

‘Only two hundred and ninety nine pounds, it’s a bargain, and there’s only one available.’

‘It’s your birthday in a couple of months, we’ll have to wait until then.’

Brian pulled at his mum’s jumper, tugging at some loose threads, showing her the image on his computer. ‘But it’s on sale, which ends tonight. The normal retail price is six hundred pounds. It really is a bargain. Please Mum, if you don’t buy it now, they’ll all be gone.’

She stared at the screen, all flashing lights, and for sale signs. She wished she could afford the nearly three hundred pound bike, but it was impossible. She wouldn’t burst his bubble, there were other ways. Maybe on Facebook market place. There was a similar bike on there for fifty pounds, she could clean it, make it look like his dream bike.

‘I’ll look for you, but you need to go to sleep.’

‘Okay Mum.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. I remember going to an auction with partner’s ex wife and w got bikes for the boys for about a tenner each. They brushed up pretty well and although not the bikes they’d hoped for, they were pleased with them. We took one of their old bikes to one of our fosters and he was thrilled to bits.
    Happy memories those.
