Ross opened the fortune cookie that was delivered with his Chinese take-out and was shocked when he read the message inside telling him that his life was in danger and that he needed leave the city immediately.

He thought his time in MI5 was over, his marriage to the Russian spy he was supposed to infiltrate changed his life for ever. Now, their idealism was shattered. How could he show his wife the news? They were happy, their children sat opposite them in school. Twelve and five, they were always called by another name.

All they wanted was to be left alone.

‘Hey, how about we go on a holiday. It’s nearly the school holidays, and I have a villa in Spain.’

One look, and it was clear his wife understood.

‘Yes, we will tell the school, work. I think we deserve to break a leg.’

‘Mum, it’s deserve a break, but what about my exams?’ Sophie asked.

‘Holiday more important.’

Sophie smiled, she wasn’t going to argue. Truth be told, every so often they moved on anyway. Not sure why, she just knew it was important. ‘It’s okay Alan, we are going on another adventure.’

‘But my friends . . .’

‘You can make new friends, after our holiday. We will be alright, like last time.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
