Fraud

‘We think you have been a victim of a fraud? Could we talk to you about money coming out of your account.’

Steve, stared at the policeman at his door – he was wary, wondering what could have happened. He wasn’t aware of anything dodgy, but then, it was difficult to concentrate when he had been in hospital.

‘Do you know this person?’ The policeman asked, sat on his sofa.

‘Yes, he is a mate. I can’t get out much, so he gets my food, and things.’

‘We were notified by your bank. Large amounts have been drawn out of your account. Twenty thousand, the last transaction a week ago.’

‘I am in the house, I don’t go out much, so he helps me out.’

‘Have you got a name?’

‘Roger Talbot. Are you sure?’

‘You are not the only person he has done this to. For now, we suggest you stop all your cards, and online banking. It is better not to share this new information with anyone.’

A shock, that was putting it mildly, but at least it wasn’t going to happen any more. He thought of ringing, but then he couldn’t get an answer for weeks. Perhaps, he knew he was going to be found out? He gave all his information willingly, not just for him, but for the other victims of fraud.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
