Old photographs, Shelly loved looking through them, but this box, hidden behind an old hoover, had been unopened since her dad died twenty years ago. She remembered the ornate carvings, but thought it was lost. Grief, or unable to deal with the memories, she wasn’t sure.
She thought the box was thrown away.
Sat on the wooden beam, she was enthralled at the pictures. Her grandmother, her dad, as a young boy. The two of them together, a close relationship. She never knew her grandmother, but learnt how strong she was. Looking after all her children, without the support of a husband. One lost when a battleship was sunk during WW1, another through illness. Taking in washing to keep her little family afloat.
At the bottom, something strange – a diary, bound in brown leather. She remembered the stories, her dad told. Each battle he was involved in, his friends he met. His words, so familiar took her back to a childhood, sat by his feet, listening to his beautiful stories.
One day, she would publish them, to show the world of the man she called Dad.
A very heartwarming story Diana. Thanks for joining in.

Lovely – this reminded me of the times I used to sit on the floor by my taid (grandad) and listen to his stories, he always had me mesmerised, happy days ❤️

So beautiful. I have started diaries over the years but have always thrown them away. I guess it seems like I wanted a diary when things were painful. No one wants to go back and reread that.
