How much attention do you pay to the dates stamped on food packaging? Do you find the various labels confusing? Will you toss out any food that has passed whatever date shows up? Or will you go ahead and consume it if it still looks and smells okay?
Yesterday, the ham we put on our salad was a day out of date – I’ve not been ill, so I assume it was okay. Eggs, there is a way to tell if it is off. You just put it in water and if it floats. If it sinks, then it has gone off. Milk keeps in the fridge, but I wouldn’t have that past it sell by date.
If it is dry, then most of the time it will have a long sell by date.
Chocolate doesn’t look right when it is out of date, it tastes different too.
I cannot worry about sell by dates, when it is the only thing in my fridge. Although, I am luckier than most. When you think about how many people have to go to food banks just to have a good meal inside of them. I am not able to help and I wish I could give more.
Certain foods can be eaten after the sell by date, but it can be dangerous, especially things like pork or chicken. If some one is hungry enough, they will have no choice but to eat what they have.
that is so true Diana! Some people unfortunately don’t have a choice!
