Peeves

What are the peeves that annoy me the most? She wanted to write a list to her partner. Sharing the information, their therapist said. Was it the way he ground his teeth? No, that wasn’t it. She chewed the end of her pen, then nodded. She always thought he could finish her sentences; like her own thoughts didn’t matter. It wasn’t as bad when he was home. In company, well, that was a different matter. The other day, she was about to say, ‘I would like to try some of those cakes.’ When Helen said, she was on a diet.

‘Okay, I can see how that will annoy you.’

‘But I only do that because of your high cholesterol.’

‘Yes, I get that, it’s just one cake won’t harm, not really,’ Tracy said.

The couple’s therapist smiled, then turned to Tracy . ‘Now, name one thing that inspires you the most about your partner.’

Her thoughts wandered through her mind, until she found something. ‘She always makes me breakfast, even when we have had a row. Her cup of tea is amazing, and sets me up for the day. Last week, she made me some healthy snacks for work.’

‘Brilliant, now Helen, what annoys you most about your partner.’

Turning to face Tracy, she sighed. ‘You are so untidy, and never clean up after yourself. I work all day, so do you. I make sure I keep things in their place, but your clothes are thrown across the bedroom floor.’

‘Sorry, I guess I can be a little messy.’

‘A little!’

‘Now something you love about Tracy.’

‘She has a kind heart, always helping other people, especially my mum. She cannot get out much, and when I am at work, she will take her to the shops, or her Bingo. It’s just I wish she could do the same for me, just sometimes.’

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
