Loved

My heart is all a quiver on the day I went to meet you. I brought all your toys; including those annoying squeaking ones. You hadn’t been loved, not lately anyway. We couldn’t get another puppy; at our age it wouldn’t be fair. We decided to go to Battersea to see if we could give another oldie a home.

There were so many dogs, of all sizes. One kept hiding its ball under a blanket like it was acting in Britain’s Got Talent. Greyhounds, Sausage dogs, German Shepherds, Labradors, and even Mongrels.

You chose us, just as much as we chose you. It was your golden eyes. Were you a German Shepherd? Perhaps a little like that, but smaller somehow. A wagging tail, and a cheeky sparkle in your eyes. Your bed was nothing more than a check, blue and white blanket. There was a stuff tiger in your mouth.

‘Please, I want to go to a proper hope, I will be good.’

With your new lead, I walk you out of your prison cell – you are such a good boy. I’m not sure of your old name, but you look like a Scamp to me.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

      1. Most definitely. Battersea was too far for us to travel and the local rescues had nothing. The internet seemed to have the same picture of the same dog with a different name, so when we found Maya, we were so pleased, and have struck gold. She’s wonderful, apart from the leadwork!!!!
