It’s The Truth

When I was young my family used to hold regular card night’s, where they would play poker. I remember looking through the stairs, hoping I would be old enough to join in their games. When I turned eighteen I was allowed to join them. We only played for pennies, and at the most five pence, but we enjoyed the night. My aunt used to cook us a spread. We would play until all our change disappeared. I never did have much of a poker face. Truth was, I was playing against experts. My nan held a card school, so they were brought up watching her in action.

I used to play Monopoly with my nephew; we cheated, discussed why it was wrong, and cheated again. He always won. I always used to owe money to the bank. On my holiday in May, we played the cheater version (my daughter, son, friends) and it surprised me how well we could all lie and do slight of hand. There were other games we played, Game of Life, Cards, Werewolf, Pokémon. Sweets, drinks, and we all had a great time.

Family time is important, and it isn’t always the big trips abroad, or a large expense. A night in, with friends and family, is remembered long beyond any holiday. The laughter, the arguments, the rivalry, and purpose.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. I agree that a family night in can be as fun as an exotic holiday. My family would play monopoly at times and Scrabble too. Now I don’t like those games anymore, as they’re too complicated for me.
