The summer ending, she looked into her wardrobe full of t shirts; hopeful for the change. It was nice to have hot weather, but this was a little over the top. Thirty degrees in September, when the leaves should be going golden. At least the weather forecast was due to change.
She stared at jumpers, all packed away in neat little piles. There was something special about wearing something so soft. At least in winter you could put on something, there was no getting away from this heat.
Even in shorts, it felt like she was melting. It was impossible to do any housework. Not that she wanted to do any when it was cool.
‘Mummy, can I go swimming today?’ William asked.
She would have said yes, but money was tight, and they couldn’t afford to go. ‘I tell you what, we’ll get the paddling pool out for a little while. That would be good, but make sure you put on your sun cream.’
‘I will Mummy, and can I have an ice-cream?’
‘We made those ice-pops, remember. How about we have one of those each?’
‘I really want an ice-cream.’
‘We haven’t got any left, but we can take a walk to buy a tub.’
William smiled, running out of the room. ‘Can I ask my friend over?’
‘Course you can love.’
She texted her husband, to see if he wanted to do a barbecue after work. There were some left over burgers in the freezer and coals. It would save cooking. Perhaps a late summer wasn’t so bad.
Now where did she put the sun cream.
This is a lovely piece. Took me back to when my boys were little.

It has been a while since mine were that young, but I can imagine my granddaughter saying something like that.
