Nelson

After the accident, Nelson never felt safe again.

It didn’t matter, it wasn’t his fault. One wobbly step outside, and he fell on to his bad hip. Now, he took each movement with care – using his stick to guide himself across the paving slabs outside his home.

He was an independent man, now it seemed he was stuck in his own head more often. It was a horrible place to be. His self doubts crashed around his mind like the teenagers in the skate park. He wanted to shout at them – nobody could tell him what to do. Instead he huddled at the front door, too scared to move.

‘Hiya Nelson! Haven’t seen you in a while,’ his neighbour said, leaning over the garden fence.

‘Had a fall, hurt my hip,’ Nelson said.

‘Oh, sorry to hear that. I tell you what, I was going into town. I’ve got to buy a few things for my holiday. I would love some company while I do. There’s a new charity shop down the high street.’

‘I’m not sure, it looks like rain.’

‘You would be doing me a favour. Honestly, since my daughter went back to work, I’ve been on my own. We could take a short walk.’

Nelson stared at his path, unsure he could do this. He liked Sheila, and her smile gave him some courage. ‘Are you sure you don’t . . .’

‘It’s okay Nelson, I get you’re a little nervous, but I am here with you. Besides, it’s been ages since we’ve had a natter. The charity shop has got a seating area, we could have a tea, and a cheesecake.’

As he moved out into the street, the sun pushed through the clouds. Good neighbours were hard to find, and he was extremely happy with his. A day out sounded brilliant, and perhaps he could find a bargain in the charity shop.

It was going to be a good day after all.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  3. You still around? I going to make a post with the two shots I took that show you pic in the top/left corner. I’ll leave it there long enough for you to comment that you saw it and then delete it. Don’t want to post it until you can see.
