Permission

As the blackness enveloped her shoulders, she allowed the darkness to give her hope. It was two years since her accident, and now she was getting ready to get married once again. She leant down. Merlin was by her side, as usual, giving his usual lick in hello.

She was at home in the dark now.

Being blind didn’t scare her, with Merlin by her side she could do anything. She felt the cotton material. White silk. She remembered standing in the middle of the shop, as the assistant pulled it tight against her skin. A new time, and a new beginning.

A second chance at life, with Merlin by her side.

She heard her dad walk in before he even held her hand.

‘You look beautiful love,’ he said.

‘Thanks Dad, but you have to say that.’

As she walked down the stairs, for the second time, the house felt at peace. She could remember happier times. The darkness, her depression, finally giving her the permission to move on.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
