Sadness in Profanity

There is a sadness in profanity – Tom used to say that to his friends, before he would go into the recesses of his muddled mind. An amazing person, always there when you needed him, struggled to do a good turn for himself.

Tom’s mobile would ring into infinity when he didn’t want to talk. It was on those days his best friend Stevie would worry – not that she could do much about the situation. It was a betrayal of trust talking to their social worker.

A drive in the car, and she would knock on the door. Sometimes that worked and Tom would answer. Clothes strewn over the floor, the bed not even made, it was like the world wasn’t allowed an opinion on his illness.

She didn’t mind being there, but if he called late at night, with work the next day, there was nothing to do but talk on the phone. Being a friend meant staying close, even when the path was rocky.

Tom would do the same for her – that’s why they were best friends.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
