Family

I love meeting up with family at Christmas because it is a chance to catch up over party snacks and splendid company. It is our family tradition to see each other a week before the actual day. My big brother or my niece will be responsible for the food. We don’t really drink much anymore, so we have lots of coffee and tea instead.

It is brilliant to spend time with my big brother – there are ten years between us and I will always be his little sister. I am fifty-seven, but still settle into my role as the youngest.

Sausage rolls, baguettes, cooked meats, pineapple and cheese on sticks, cheesecake, fruit cake, mince pies, whipped cream and a lot more. Although, I am not fond of mince pies or that type of fruit. Last year, my brother disguised some mince pies with icing on top. It was only when I covered it with cream I realised my mistake. I ate it all, but under duress. If I closed my eyes, the cheese cake would take away the taste.

It is like we have only seen each other the day before. We settle into our family routine. It is like we have never been apart. We laugh, chat, and the months seem like days.

We think of those who have passed away; especially my big sister. As siblings, there is a close bond. A classy lady, she was always there with expert advice and love. It is as though she is sitting in the chair opposite with a smile on her face while me and my brother sit next to each other on the sofa.

It is one of the best days of my year.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. Lovely post Diana. When my parents were alive we would gather at Christmas usually doing the local Santa Run on Christmas Eve and managing to see those more distant over the holidays. Sadly those days are long gone and my family is not as close as it was, which is nothing to do with distance. Hubby and I have lovely Christmases though. We have friends here and exchange gifts but it is usually a very quiet affair. One Christmas Day we were up on the prom to watch the sunrise. It was very mild for the time of year!

      1. I used to have a houseful on Christmas day when I was with ex partner but no offers of help with the washing up. As soon as it was all done and pressies had been opened, they were wanting their tea. Sundays were pretty similar actually but only 5 of us instead of about 15.
