Rory Lion

Rory was the most amazing lion; ever since Lily was old enough to speak, he spent his time drying her tears. When she argued with her mummy about not wanting to eat her broccoli, he said she would grow big if she ate those disgusting greens.

Those are the ones she loves the most now.

She got her big idea when she watched an advert about children without a mummy or a daddy. They didn’t have anyone to love them or read them bedtime stories. They lived homes, like school, but with lots of other children.

As she walked into the store with her father, an enormous box stationed at the entrance greeted them. Among its contents discarded playthings, toys that no longer held another child’s interest. Rory, her beloved friend, who had faithfully cared for her during the days of spots that covered her back and tummy, would want her to be kind.

With a note tucked into the top pocket detailing his likes and dislikes, she kissed him on his nose. Please don’t give him yellow peas, they make him sick; keep the landing light on; chocolate is his favourite sweet; he is a loyal, happy, amazing storyteller.

‘Are you sure, sweetheart?’

‘Yes, I have so many toys. I think he would make another little girl or boy happy.’

She carefully sat Rory on top of the box so he could show the other toys not to be scared. ‘You are my best friend. I will never forget you,’ she said, before saying goodbye for the last time.
