Coffee and Cake

The energy sapped like a deflating balloon; she collapsed on the sofa, her legs refusing to move any further. All she wanted was a mug of caffeine filled coffee and a large slab of carrot cake, but getting up was next to impossible.

From the moment she woke up, she was rushing from one job to the next.

It didn’t help that she didn’t get to sleep until two o’clock in the morning. The pillows were full of lumps, and she twisted in bed so much, all she ended up doing was staring at the ceiling. The shadows crept along the ridges. When the light finally brightened the gloom, she was ready to hurl her mobile out of the window.

She pushed her body off the sofa and into the kitchen. She clicked the kettle on. The clear liquid gently bubbled and danced, creating a symphony of small pops. With anticipation, she stood there, the warmth of the rising steam caressing her face, as she patiently waited for the water to reach its boiling point.

With a firm grip on the handle, she poured the hot water on to her coffee. Its bitter aroma giving her a little boost of much needed energy. She cut a healthy size of cake and licked her fingers. The butter icing slid down her throat, followed by a big bite of the cake itself.

The washing up could wait, and for the sake of her mental health, she wanted to go back into the front room. There was a box set with her name on it. Watching a murder mystery always put her to sleep.

An hour’s shut eye wouldn’t hurt.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
