Going on a tour seemed a good idea to spend the day. A mystery coach trip, where you didn’t know where you would end up and they could be anywhere. Beth sat at the back with her husband. He was reading his newspaper, wondering what horses to bet on that day. Another good reason for going. She hoped there would be no betting shops to spoil the day. She wouldn’t mind if they won, but he always chose the ones who were still running the next day.

‘So where are we going?’

‘It’s a mystery tour. It will be fun,’ Beth said, and watched a drop of rain trickle down the cold glass. ‘Besides, I’m rather looking forward to it.’

‘Need to be back before four, though. There’s a sure cert running. If I win enough, I’ll treat you to a meal out on the last night.’

‘That would be great,’ she said, painting a smile on her face.

The coach hummed into action, and she slipped her arm through his. Each road, and the commentator gave information about all the public houses in the Kent countryside. As they passed each pub, the tour guide went into depth about their historical background.

‘We are going into Pluck’s Gutter,’ the tour guide said. ‘One of the oldest villages in Kent. It is where the oldest pub in Kent is. The Dog and Duck serves the best bitter and we have a comedian to entertain you.’

Covered in red brick, it was more like a stately home that a pub. It could be a great way to spend the afternoon. Beth checked her watch. It was impossible to get back before four. Their meal could wait, and a few drinks sounded great.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
