Celebrity Status

Last month, Britany Spears published The Woman In Me. Today’s question  https://jewishyoungprofessional.wordpress.com/2023/11/22/jyprovocative-question-11-memoir-thanksgiving-edition/

Have you read a memoir that surprised you? In what way?

I am watching ‘‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’’, where Brittany Spears’ sister is living in the Australian jungle with other celebrities. Some I don’t know as they are from reality shows, others I have seen on TV shows. There is a You Tuber, who is hilarious, especially when doing the eating trial. The other night it was pizza, with various gross toppings, including mealworms.

Ant and Dec are famous in England, not sure about the rest of the world. They have a dry, English sort of humour. They are on our televisions most of the year. Britain’s Got Talent, and Saturday Night Takeaway are other shows they are hosting.

It is a show where we get to laugh at celebrities – what the show is about, really. They do trials involving lots of scary things like spiders, rats, cockroaches, snakes, pigeons and ants that bite. They bury them underground, or have them swim in tanks full of mini crocodiles. The trials are a way of earning stars, which will win meals for camp.

I cannot take a lot of what they reveal while they are camping in the jungle as fact because if they are an actor by trade, how will you be sure it is true? There are lots of tears, even two days in. There was an American version, but I don’t know if it lasted more than a year.

The only book I read about a celebrity is David Jason, and it was interesting, but I only picked it up because I saw it in a book shop. I don’t read newspapers, or even look on the internet to see how a celebrity has had an affair or not. It doesn’t bother me. It is their own personal life, and nothing to do with me.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.

  1. I’m glad we don’t have a TV and one of the many reasons we didn’t get one in 2007 after moving was because there was nothing of interest to us worth watching to warrant the TV licence. IMO there still isn’t. Too many reality shows, soaps and tittle tattle interviews. Besides, we can read all about Strictly and the like on the internet.
