‘A toast to the happy couple,’ Dad said, crashing back into his seat.
My champagne flute trembling, I did as I was told. Somehow today passed by in such a blur, I barely believed my vowes to be true. I convinced myself it was nerves.
Every bride went through them.
As my future struggles to stand, doubts resurface. Does he love me enough to stay sober? My gold band twisted tight, I smile for the camera.
Yet again.
The best man speech did nothing to allay my fears. His slip of the tongue, about their stag night. This girl with bright falsies? It could only be one woman. Dan just gave him a lopsided smirk, and touched his finger to his lips.
‘I want to say something,’ I smoothed down my silk gown. ‘I have known my … husband for five years. He has never once been faithful. The first time he hit on my friend at work. Drink has always been his excuse. I didn’t mean to. I forgave him. This new bit of strumpet is the last straw. Sorry, I get that this has been expensive, but he is not worth spending the rest of my life with.’
I poured the beige liquid over his shop brought suit. Seconds later he was drenched.
‘Chelsea, you’re welcome to him!’
