A House Move

A change of scenery, and Robert was going to miss his familiar routes in his home town, and he scuttled in every rabbit warren, never afraid of getting lost. He preferred the dark, because the shadows shifted into nothingness. Each night spent wandering until he met a friend he could play with.

Although, it was more difficult since they started walking in pairs. It was highly uncooperative with them. He put in his notice at the funeral parlour. A house move, he told his boss.

The truth? Not enough victims.

Packing wasn’t fun for most. For him, it was a chance to revisit the past. A collection of jewelry; some expensive and most just paste. A silver necklace, the heart ripped in two, was held together by sticky tape. She was beautiful and his masterpiece of love.

He chose the lipstick for her; bright red to mark her demise. The blond; never knew her name. Darker colours suited her. There was an empty shell stretching into the abyss of his latest victim. She wore a marriage band, but kept it in her bag. Clear gloss, he accepted his mistake.

That was his problem, collecting things.

It seemed rather rude to get rid of his memories. He closed the lid on his suitcase. They nestled in between his boxers and black suit. Acquiring another would be easy; they said it would be a glowing reference and to come back anytime.

Strange how life carried on, he thought, closing the flat door. His journey to the car was a valued treasure. She was isolated. He smiled, as she walked by.

I am a fifty something mother of two grown up children, and one beautiful grandchild. I have been married for nearly thirty-four years. My first book was published ten years ago. I wrote my book Sticks and Stones because of my experience of being bullied at school.
